Nowhere nearer to democracy

The very exchange here on CNN's I-Report clearly shows the dividedness of opinion among Thais themselves. Thaksin is indeed such a polarizing figure that those on the anti-Thaksin end of the spectrum would more than welcome military efforts or anything against him, even though such events are generally viewed as part of the nation's infantile struggle with democracy. Many who disagree with military action aren't Thaksin supporters, and as Mr Jerauld reported above, "thought they had put this kind of political interferance behind them and see this as a giant step backwards".

These events, however, reflect upon Thailand's immature state as a democratic monarchy. The last three major events of violence involving the military have been settled only by intervention of the King, and even now, while processes are being held to regain a democratic government, a coup is happening in much the same way as what happened fifteen years ago, bringing us back into the vicious cycle we naïvely hoped we had escaped. It is unimaginable what kind of development the country will have to go through should the time come when the King is no longer available to settle such events.

อย่างไรก็ตาม เหตุการณ์เหล่านี้ก็สะท้อนให้เห็นถึงความอ่อนแอของประเทศไทยในฐานะรัฐประชาธิปไตยอันมีพระมหากษัตริย์เป็นประมุข เหตุการณ์รุนแรงที่มีทหารเกี่ยวข้องล่าสุดสามครั้ง จบลงได้เพียงเพราะพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงลงมาไกล่เกลี่ย และตอนนี้ แม้เรากำลังพยายามดำเนินขั้นตอนให้ได้มาซึ่งรัฐบาลประชาธิปไตยใหม่ ก็ยังมีรัฐประหารที่แทบจะเหมือนกับเมื่อสิบห้าปีที่แล้วไม่มีผิด ซึ่งก็พาเรากลับเข้าสู่วงจรอุบาทว์ที่ต่างก็หวังลม ๆ แล้ง ๆ ไว้ว่าจะรอดพ้นมาแล้ว เรื่องหนึ่งที่ไม่อาจจินตนาการถึงได้เลยก็คือ หากมีวันหนึ่งที่ไม่มีพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงคอยช่วยเหลือแล้ว ประเทศชาติจะต้องผ่านวิบากกรรมอะไรอีกบ้าง กว่าจะได้มาซึ่งประชาธิปไตย
